BOOK REVIEW: KINGDOM OF SONGS AND CURSES BY TARA QUINN

Coral is adjusting to life as a mermaid and being a prisoner of the Undersea. While still adamant to reclaim her best friend’s soul from the Sea of Souls, she realizes that in order to succeed, she’ll need the help of the last person she’d ever want helping: her wicked siren stepmother.

From the author of Kingdom of Sirens and Monsters, Tara Quinn gives us the stunning conclusion to the dual “Snow White” and “The Little Mermaid” retelling.

What I liked:
– Leif. Still my favorite character, but with so much more depth as we learn so much more about him.
– The clever merging twist. The way Quinn tied Coral to all kingdoms was a pleasant and clever twist I didn’t see coming.
– The different POV voices. There are a few new POVs from KoSaM, and each one is unique to the character, like how Coral and Kendra are twins, but they couldn’t be more different, even in POV.

What I didn’t like:
– Eugene’s shift from Heart of Stone and Sea-Foam. While inevitable (and this is a completely personal preference and has nothing to do with Quinn’s story), I still remember him as a very caring brother in HoSaSF. Had I not read it, Eugene’s flair and nasty attitude wouldn’t have bothered me, as it flowed identical to how he was in KoSaM. But I couldn’t set HoSaSF aside in my brain while reading KoSaC, and all I wanted to do was hug him and tell him everything would be okay.

Overall:
– Wonderful conclusion, and I can’t wait to see what new retellings Quinn has in store next!

Kingdom of Songs and Curses came out November 5th, 2022. Have you read it yet? Do you plan on reading it?
