Book Review: Order of the Hunt

BOOK REVIEW: ORDER OF THE HUNT BY JO NARAYAN

Demons have been running rampant for years, and the only ones who can see them and keep them at bay in their little town are four teenagers.

When the Order of the Hunt comes recruiting, these teenagers not only have to learn to master their abilities, but they also have to find their place amongst one another, as well as understanding their limits. But does the Order have the patience to wait for them to get their act together?

Before I get into this, I would just like to say that this is a prequel to Narayan’s debut novel The Wraith’s Bargain, but you don’t need to have read it to enjoy this one.

What I liked:
– The dialogue. Narayan did an amazing job at using words and terms we’d hear in everyday use, and it all flowed so well together. I could hear the tone in their voices and everything.
– The different POV voices. The novel is divided into four parts—one for each of the teenagers—and each of the POVs differs so vastly from one another that there is no question about who is who.
– The magic. I enjoyed the different abilities and how they worked. Be it via thoughts, energy, by gathering items, or reciting incantations, there was a little bit of everything.
– The demons. I love me some baddies, and the demons were just perfect. Their descriptions were interesting, the names were very creative, and their world was definitely something I’d love to explore more of, especially when you get into the half demon semantics.

What I didn’t like:
– Jeremy’s attitude. This is definitely nothing against Narayan’s characterization, just something that personally irked me. I got so irritated over Jeremy’s bullheadedness that all I wanted to do was grab him by the shoulders, shake him, and tell him to get over himself.

Overall:
– I enjoyed it and can’t wait for more! I haven’t read The Wraith’s Bargain yet, and I’m definitely looking forward to it!

Let me know if you plan to read Order of the Hunt! It’s currently available in eBook and paperback.
