My Top 5 Favorite Movies Based on Books
Some books make you want to see the movie. Some movies instantly make you want to pick up the book. And sometimes, you fall in love with the movie first—only to discover there’s a whole story behind it just waiting to be read. In all cases, I’m sold.
Here are my top 5 favorite movies based on books—films that stuck with me long after the credits rolled.
1. The Da Vinci Code (2006)

I first heard about the book back in 2003 through online forums. It seemed like everyone was talking about it. When I moved to the States in 2004, I spotted it on a friend’s table. Turns out, their entire family had read and loved it. They let me borrow it, and wow! I was hooked. The twists, the symbols, the secret societies… I was all in.
So when the movie was announced, I got a little (okay, a lot) protective of Silas, my favorite character. But then they cast Paul Bettany—my all-time favorite actor—and I immediately relaxed. Silas was in good hands. And he absolutely delivered.
2. Howl’s Moving Castle (2004)

I was already a huge fan of Studio Ghibli thanks to Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, so I knew I was going to love Howl’s Moving Castle. The art? Stunning. The storytelling? Captivating. I immediately developed a crush on Howl (naturally), but it was Calcifer who truly stole my heart. His crotchety, comedic sass had me hooked long before I even knew what banter was.
It wasn’t until much later that I learned the film was based on a book series. I spotted a bookstagrammer showing off a special edition and immediately snagged the ebook. The book and the movie are so similar yet vastly different that I ended up loving both equally—for entirely different reasons.
3. Inkheart (2008)

The movie had me at “characters being read out of books.” That concept is pure reader—and author—wish fulfillment. The cast was solid (especially Paul Bettany, again!), and the world felt vivid and believable.
Naturally, I bought the entire trilogy right after watching it. Have I read them yet? …Not quite. But they’re waiting patiently on my shelf. (No judgment, right?)
4. The Martian (2015)

I’d like to point out I enjoyed this movie even before my crush on Bucky/Sebastian Stan! It’s intense, surprisingly heartwarming, and it hit all the right notes, especially when it came to adventure. The science-y bits didn’t go over my head (somehow), and the humor kept me completely hooked.
It balances nerdy brilliance with emotional stakes in a way few sci-fi movies do. Space farming has never looked cooler.
5. Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Disney+, 2023– )

Yes, I know this post is about movies, and this one’s technically a series, but stick with me. I watched the original films and genuinely enjoyed them… without realizing they were based on a book series.
Despite my love for Greek mythology, I wasn’t immediately drawn to the books. I was more interested in The Kane Chronicles because I’ve always had a soft spot for Egyptian mythology. Then I grabbed Magnus Chase and Trials of Apollo before finally circling back to Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus.
So when Disney+ announced a more faithful adaptation, I was all in. And it delivered. The casting, the pacing, and the humor just worked. I can!t wait for Season 2!
I may not have read all the books these movies are based on, but that didn’t stop me from loving every second onscreen. These five stories pulled me in, stuck with me, and—whether they led to a book purchase or just sparked a major case of story envy—they reminded me why I love storytelling in any format.
Your Turn! What are your favorite movies that were based on books? Did they make you want to read the original, or did you love them just as they were? Let me know in the comments. I’m always ready for more recs!
