What Is Steampunk? A Beginner’s Guide + My Ebook Bundle Sale

Yesterday was International Steampunk Day, which makes today the perfect time to answer a question I get a lot: what is steampunk?

If you’ve ever seen a pair of brass goggles or a corset-wearing sky pirate on a book cover, you’re in the right area. Steampunk is one of those genres that feels instantly recognizable, even if you’re not sure exactly how to define it. So let’s break it down.

Steampunk’s Origins

At its core, steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy that reimagines a world powered by steam technology. It’s typically set in an alternate version of the 19th century. Think Victorian or Edwardian aesthetic meets advanced machinery. It’s a place where airships rule the skies, brass gears hum with magic or science, and adventure lurks behind every soot-streaked corner.

It all started with literature. In the 1980s, writers like K.W. Jeter (who first coined the term “steampunk”), Tim Powers, and James P. Blaylock began writing stories that mashed up Victorian culture and science fiction, creating something completely new. And while these books were foundational, many trace the genre’s roots back even further to classics like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne or The Time Machine by H.G. Wells.

Whether steampunk leans more fantasy or science fiction depends on the story (and sometimes the mood of the author). Some steampunk focuses on gadgets and mechanics, while others blend in alchemy or magic. Steampunk is both a vibe and a storytelling lens. It lets creators explore wild technology, gorgeous fashion, and complex societal structures.

So… How Did I Get Into Steampunk?

It started with a pair of goggles and a pocket watch.

Before I even knew it had a name, I was drawn to the fashion: the layers, the leather and lace, the gears and brass. I remember thinking, Whatever this is, I want in.

Then, thanks to my drum instructor’s wife and her steampunk bookstore (yes, it was as cool as it sounds), I was introduced not only to the fashion but also the aesthetic, the etiquette, and the stories, music, games, and more.

And as an author, that world gave me the perfect playground.

I started writing steampunk fantasy—a blend of alternate history, alchemy, and class divide. In my world, technology and magic don’t just coexist, they collide.
