Game Review: SteamWorld Heist II
Game Review: SteamWorld Heist II
Available on multiple platforms including PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, SteamWorld Heist II is a fun turn-based tactical strategy game set in a quirky universe of robots.
Gameplay Mechanics:
SteamWorld Heist II builds on the turn-based strategy mechanics of the first game, with more emphasis on tactics. The game also keeps the unique manual-aiming mechanics from the combat system.
This time, there’s also a customizable mix-and-match abilities system for the robots. This gives you interesting combinations and strategies, as the missions are designed around the anticipation of pulling off trick shots.
Story and Characters:
In SteamWorld Heist II, you follow one-armed captain Quincy Leeway, who’s living in the shadow of his legendary mother, Krakenbane. To make a name for himself, Leeway ends up investigating a mysterious rust threatening the world’s water supply.
The story, a backdrop for the actual tactical gameplay, has a mix of humorous and heartfelt moments. The characters have lots of charm, and the cameos were especially wonderful!
Unique Features:
One of the distinct features is the class system. Equipping different weapons changes a character’s role and abilities. This makes levels more manageable (and fun!).
There’s also an open-world naval exploration system. This moves away from the first game’s connected-nodes system. In this game, you pilot a submarine to explore the world and discover new locations.
World-Building and Setting:
Set in a steampunk, pirate-themed world with robots instead of humans, SteamWorld Heist II expands on the events from the first SteamWorld Heist game.
It combines an adventurous and lighthearted pirate quality with a grim underlying mystery about a water crisis. The world exploration is both engaging and fun.
Sound and Music:
The soundtrack for the first game features music by steampunk band Steam Powered Giraffe. As a fan, it’s how I first learned about the game. So when they announced the soundtrack to Steam World Heist II, I was instantly on board. The music is catchy and well-crafted, enhancing the quirky steampunk vibe.
Themes:
SteamWorld Heist II has themes of rebellion and survival, and Leeway’s personal theme is about finding purpose. The game also touches on slight environmental themes with the contaminated water supply.
Replayability and Longevity:
It took me a little over 39 hours to finish the game. There are various difficulty settings that give it good replay value on their own, but experimenting with different character builds and strategies is really what it’s all about.
Overall Experience:
SteamWorld Heist II is a great turn-based strategy experience with quirky characters, fun combat, and a rich steampunk world. It’s a solid sequel for fans of the original.
