Celebrating Friendship in Fiction: A National Friendship Day Tribute
Today is National Friendship Day. With the International Day of Friendship on July 30th and National Best Friends Day on June 8th, there’s no better time to talk about the power of friendship in my novels, don’t you think?
While romance novels are dominating the literary scene, I’ve always found myself drawn to a different kind of relationship: friendship. The emotional connections formed in friendships can be just as strong, if not stronger, than those in romantic relationships. Friends are often the ones who know us best, offering comfort and understanding in ways that others cannot.
The Techno Mage
In The Techno Mage, Ikarim, Arteus, and Magaliana are all adopted by Doktor Gesselmeyer at various stages of their lives—Arteus as a baby, Ikarim as a young child, and Magaliana as a teenager. Ikarim and Arteus formed a brotherly friendship growing up, and while both fall for Magaliana, she does not reciprocate their feelings, instead viewing one as a brother, the other as a friend.
But it’s that strong relationship that brings them together in the end after having been separated for so long. And it’s what helps them win.
Rise of the Sky Pirate
In Rise of the Sky Pirate, Benedict grew up with Kitch in the orphanage. And once they left, they still remained close. Benedict appreciates how she always looked out for him, even in his darkest moments.
And while his relationship with Mathias started off as simply wanting to turn him in for a reward, it developed into something stronger.
The Elemental’s Guardian
In The Elemental’s Guardian, Ferenc isn’t really much of a people person, and Olivia is a bit over the top for him at times. And though he’d warmed up to her enough to help her with her mission, he didn’t realize he cared about her and that they’d already been acting like old friends until he’d thought her dead.
Even quiet little Dormouse, so shy and reserved, eventually forms a strong bond with Olivia, who acts like a protective mama bear toward her.
Five Friendships to Love in Project Elementals 2
In Project Elementals 2, I explore friendships in even greater depth. Here are five key friendships that will capture your heart:
Ferenc and Olivia:
Their bond has only grown stronger since THE ELEMENTAL’S GUARDIAN. They communicate in unspoken ways and often serve as each other’s voice of reason. This relationship is a beautiful example of how understanding and support can flourish over time.
Ferenc and Dormouse:
Their connection from the first book evolves into something more complex. Despite the challenges they face, Ferenc respects Dormouse’s boundaries, demonstrating the importance of mutual respect and understanding in friendships.
Dormouse and Olivia:
Olivia’s protective nature towards Dormouse continues, and their friendship helps each other grow in self-confidence and balance. This dynamic showcases the nurturing aspect of friendship.
Olivia and Anya:
Olivia’s shift in mentorship from Ferenc to Anya in PE2 brings out a new dimension in her character. Their intense and protective bond illustrates how friendships can evolve and adapt to new circumstances.
Moses and Kamran:
Friends since childhood, Moses and Kamran’s relationship is built on a foundation of loyalty and sacrifice. Their willingness to go to great lengths for each other emphasizes the depth of their bond.
As we celebrate National Friendship Day, let’s take a moment to appreciate the friends in our lives and the ones we meet in the pages of our favorite books.
