Game Review: Lost Words—Beyond the Page
Game Review: Lost Words—Beyond the Page
Available on multiple platforms including PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch, Lost Words: Beyond the Page is a heartfelt adventure game that combines the use of a diary with a fantastical story set in the world of Estoria.
Gameplay Mechanics:
The game allows you to interact with Izzy’s diary entries and the magical world she creates through storytelling. One unique mechanic is the ability to manipulate words to solve puzzles and progress through the story.
I did, however, manage to glitch the game when I fell in lava. A stalactite I needed to knock down never reappeared. I had to exit out of the game completely and restart from the save point which, thankfully, wasn’t too far away.
Story and Characters:
The plot revolves around a young girl named Izzy who is coping with her grandmother’s illness. Through her diary entries, you explore both her real-world struggles and her adventures in the made-up world of Estoria. This dual narrative is interesting, and the journal entries, in particular, had me teary-eyed.
World-Building and Setting:
Lost Words: Beyond the Page is a beautiful game. The diary sections have watercolor illustrations that bring Izzy’s personal story to life, while the world of Estoria has vibrant colors and imaginative landscapes.
Sound and Music:
The subtle audio cues enhance the storytelling, and the musical score was great at adding depth to both the diary entries and the adventures in Estoria.
Themes:
Lost Words: Beyond the Page has themes of grief (have the tissues ready!), healing, and the power of storytelling.
Replayability and Longevity:
It took me about 5–6 hours total to finish the game, making it a relatively quick experience but very impactful. The emotional depth alone gives it a lasting impression. Also, there are a few areas where you get to decide what happens in the world of Estoria. Since it’s a relatively short game, that alone gives it great replayability.
Overall Experience:
Lost Words: Beyond the Page is a deeply moving and beautifully crafted game. Its clever use of words as gameplay elements and heartfelt story creates a wonderful experience. Despite the short gameplay, it’s a must for fans of narrative-driven games and those who appreciate a well-told story.
