My Favorite Steampunk Works

I’ve done a lot of research these past few weeks for my novel as I continue to revise.

Most of what I researched involved the words “Did ___ exist during the Victorian Era?”, “When was ___ invented?”, and “What did Victorian Era ___’s look like?”.  Sometimes I’d wonder if other Steampunk artists did as much research as I currently am, or if I’m just not enough of a Steampunk connoisseur as I’d like to think I am.

Speaking of Steampunk artists, I’d like to introduce you to some of my favorite Steampunk works.  But first…  What exactly is Steampunk?

Steampunk is a sub-genre of fantasy and speculative fiction, set in an era (often Victorian era England) or world where steam power is still widely used. Steampunk also includes important elements of science fiction and/or fantasy, such as fictional technological inventions, or real technological developments (like computers). Often times, Steampunk also contains alternate history-style presentations with a basis of functionality (airships!).

That being said, here are some of my favorite works:

Books:

The Anubis Gates by Tim Powers
Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld
Boneshaker by Cherie Priest

Movies:

Treasure Planet
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Howl’s Moving Castle

Music:

Abney Park
Steam Powered Giraffe

Professor Elemental

As you can see (if you’ve clicked on the links), everything is vastly different from one another, but it all falls under the Steampunk sub-genre.

I’m also pretty lucky that Michigan has a pretty awesome Steampunk community that get together for conventions, outings, etc.

If you’ve heard about Steampunk before, what is your favorite work?  If Steampunk is new to you, did any of my favorite works pique your interest?

Let me know in the comments!
