Editing update 1.1
I have to admit: Editing is not going as well as I had hoped.
Truthfully, my novel is all over the place. It’s even unfinished, and that seems to be what is causing the most problems.
Back in 2011, I had started to write the first part of Elementals for NaNoWriMo, tentatively called Stormrider. Unfortunately, I hit a bit of writer’s block and put the novel on pause for a bit while I worked on Plan B.
(I always have a Plan B during NaNoWriMo, in case of writer’s block, especially because I’m a Pantser. If I haven’t used Plan B, it becomes Plan A for the following year.)
Although my novel was put on pause, I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Suddenly, it became so much bigger as ideas just flowed. So in 2013 I wrote the second part of Elementals during NaNoWriMo. I was able to reach 50k words on that one without having to resort to a Plan B.
But then, I had what I thought was a wonderful idea: What if, instead of two separate novels, I combine them into one big novel?
Unfortunately, because Stormrider wasn’t finished, I have to not only finish it, but finish it so that it makes sense to tie into Elementals. And that is where the Plot Holes are just killing me. I also have the point of view of Stormrider written in 3rd person, limited, while Elementals head-hops a-la George R. R. Martin. I decided to take certain chapters in Elementals and sprinkle them in between chapters in Stormrider, but that was easier said than done. I thought that maybe putting the summary of all of the chapters of both stories on flash cards would be a good idea- that way I can visually see what it looks like when it gets moved- but it’s harder than I thought it was going to be.
Editing is a lot of work, guys. Maybe I chose a hard novel to start out with.
